Ideal Jawa Yezdi
Monday, July 14th, 2008IDEAL JAWA (INDIA) LIMITED, widely known as JAWA, commenced operations in the year 1960. The company’s logo “For Ever Bike For Ever Value” appropriately conveyed the Ideology behind the product.

Commercial production of motorcycles began in 1961 after technical collaboration with JAWA of Czechoslovakia. The period between 1961 to 1985 witnessed good performance and noticeable profit was achieved. The production was in the tune of around 36000 vehicles per annum. Collaboration with JAWA of Czechoslovakia ended in 1968 by which time JAWA had achieved in-house expertise for achieving indigenous manufacturing technology and design of vehicles known under the brand name of “YEZDI”.

Around 1986 saw the entry of the Japanese bikes into the Indian Market. These bikes possessed better fuel economy and were more sophisticatedly designed. The bikes were lighter and controls were more slick. Even though this has an impact on the sales of the Yezdi, Jawa continued production and withstood competition well. The advantages on its side were lower maintenance costs and good pricing. Added to this the Jawa bikes were sturdy and appropriate for semi urban and rural users. The company was closed in 1996-1997.
On Sunday, 13th July 2008, the Yezdi Roadking Club of Bangalore, India, formed about a year ago by three enthusiasts Amrith, Lokesh and Sam, organized a rally to celebrate the International Jawa-CZ-Yezdi Day. The rally commenced at Cubbon park in the city and touched Channapatna, a place located about 60 km south-west from Bangalore. Although the initial number of participants was expected to be 50, the actual turnout almost touched 130. “These bikes are old, yet they give me a unique biking experience”, says Amrith, one of the founders of the club. Brian, another member adds that even though production has stopped, there are local mechanics who are equipped to handle these bikes and spares are available with private suppliers.
The Yezdi, nearing four decades of its launch, still roars along and occupies a special place in the hearts of many!
